Home Remedies for Body Odour
Body odour or bromhidrosis is caused due to the smell of bacteria that grows on the body. We produce two kinds of sweat:
- Eccrine, an apparent, odourless sweat that appears all over our bodies, performing the vital role of regulating body temperature, and
- Apocrine, a thicker matter that is produced by glands in the underarm and groin areas. It is odourless until bacteria on the skin's surface takes action upon it. The by-product of this is what we call body odour.
Causes of body odour
There are various causes of body odour. Some are controllable while others are involuntary. These causes are:
- Alcohol use
- Tobacco use (of the smoking and chewing variety)
- Dental problems
- Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
- Poor hygiene
- Heavy physical activities and sports
- Toxins (in the home, diet, or environment)
- Stress
- Hormones (especially during menopause)
- Medications

- Use apple cider vinegar instead of deodorant. Put it in a mug of water and use it to wash the armpits, while bathing. This helps to decrease the pH of the skin and get rid of armpit odour.
- Take bathe at least thrice in a day, in the summer season, when one tends to sweat a lot.
- Put the baby powder or talc to your armpits, as an alternative of deodorants.
- Avoid refined foods such as hydrogenated oils and other processed foods. Consume healthy food that contains loads of fiber, whole grains, wheat, soy products and green leafy veggies. Also, remember to eat less meat and dairy products.
- Avoid spicy, pungent foods. Frequent use of foods containing garlic, curry and cumin can cause some overpowering odours to emanate from your pores often up to 24 hours after consumption.
- Drink ample of water, as this will help you to get rid of body odour.
- Body odour always lingers on clothes. So, wash your clothes everyday and never wear the same outfit without washing it. Keep in mind that wearing sleeveless clothes will only make the smell more prominent. If you are a person who sweats a lot, wear clothes with sleeves as often as possible. Wear cotton clothes to soak sweat during summer.
