Home Remedies for Cracked Heels

Lack of attention to foot care can cause cracked heels. Medically, they are also known as heel fissures.

Cracked heels are normal linear cut wounds and generally affect the surface level, which comprises of the epidermis. Sometimes it may penetrate into the dermis and become painful. Extreme pressure on the feet pads make the feet to expand sideways. If the skin surrounding the sides of the feet is dry they crack and cause cracked heels.

Cracked heels are commonly found in old people or people who are continuously exerting pressure on the feet pad. Cracked heels mostly affect both the feet.

The people who get cracked heels, just makes their feet feel rough, so here we have some tips which can be used to prevent and get rid of cracked heels.

Following are the remedies to get rid of cracked heels.

  • Make sure that every part and corner of your feet is cleaned. Then moisturize your feet daily with creams that contain humectants and emollients.

  • Before going to bed soak your feet in warm water with salt, and scrub your feet and between toes.

  • Soak the feet in lemon juice for about 10minutes. Follow this remedy on a weekly basis until one finds a change.

  • Soak your heels in lukewarm water and use a pumice-stone to remove dead skin to smooth the heels or use a foot scrubs after soaking the feet in lukewarm water. Put on a deep moisturizing lotion or Vaseline and wear the socks to cover it for sometime. This method will protect the feet from excessive dryness.

  • After applying the cream, wear clean and comfortable socks. Leave socks on overnight. Socks help to keep moisturized cracked heels free from air exposure and dryness.

  • Warm some coconut oil, add a little wax into it and after cooling, apply it onto your heels.

  • Another remedy is to melt paraffin wax and mix it well with little mustard oil. Apply on the affected area of your heels. Wash it off in the morning. Do this for 10 or 15 days and see the difference.

  • Make a pulp of a ripe banana and apply it on the dry or cracked area of the heel. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse it clean.

  • A daily application of a mixture of glycerin and rosewater is known to soothe and cure cracked heels.

  • Apply any hydrogenated vegetable oil after washing the feet clean on dry and cracked areas of the feet. After applying a thick coat of oil on the feet, wear a pair of thick socks. Leaving this application overnight can certainly provide positive results in few days.

  • Another efficient remedy is to melt paraffin wax and mix it well with little mustard oil. Apply on the dry or cracked area of the heels. Rinse it off in the morning. A continuous application for 10 to15 days can give desirable results.

  • Cracked heels are caused due to the deficiency of vitamins, minerals, zinc and omega 3 fatty acids. Therefore, it is necessary to have a diet rich in vitamins, minerals and zinc. The body does not naturally produce omega-3 fatty acids, therefore it has to be ingested from food or supplements.
