Symptoms of skin boils
The symptoms of boils or abscess include a painful pink or red bump about 1/2 inch in diameter. While its surrounding skin also get red and swollen.

Within a day the boil get filled with pus. Within four to seven days the boil becomes more painful and grows larger, sometimes reaching golf-ball size. Finally it develops a yellow-white tip that ruptures and drains. Boils generally take about two weeks to clear. Small boils usually heal without scar while a large boil may leave a mark. Boils generally appear on the face, neck, buttocks and armpits.

A cluster boils is called a carbuncle. It generally appears on the back of the neck, shoulders or thighs, especially in older men. Carbuncles are deeper and more severe infection than single boil. It sometimes occurs with a fever. Carbuncles need a immediate treatment to prevent the infection enter into the blood stream.
