Treatment for Boils

Boils are usually infections caused by bacteria called staphylococcus aurea, a common germ found on the skin. The body normally fights these off but sometimes a bacterium alters, becomes extra tough to kill and creates an infection. A boil's infection is under the dermis, between the muscle and dermis.

A boil is bigger and more painful. The center of infection is a raised, red, painful mound, surrounded by red skin hot to touch. All red areas indicate the degree of the infection below the epidermis.

A boil is also termed as a furuncle, furunculitis and cellulitis. Boils are very painful for patients and a local numbing agent is normally used before draining.

Boils can be treated either with home remedies or with medications. If the boil does not improve with medication then it should be seen by the healthcare practitioner.

The primary treatment for boils is application of heat in form of hot soaks or hot packs. Application of hot compress for 10 -15 minutes enhances the circulation to the area allowing the body to defend against infection. Application of hot compress four to fives times a day will aid in bringing the boil to a head and encourage easy drainage.

Initiate cleaning your skin with an antiseptic soap if your skin often breaks into boils. This could decrease frequent appearance of boils.

To prevent bacteria from building up on the skin always use an antibacterial soap. This can help to diminish the chance of the hair follicles to get infected and prevent the formation of boils.

Daily use of a loofah can break up oil plugs and build up around the follicles.

Cysts frequently turn into boils. We can prevent cysts by avoiding direct pressure or irritation on the buttock area when the hair follicle becomes inflamed. Regular soap and hot water cleaning and drying is helpful.
