Baby Skin Care Products
People with darker skin have different skin care needs, and, therefore, the need arises of producing skin care products for black skin. Many large producers of skin care products have paid little attention to the needs of ethnic consumers. However, in recent years, more and more products have been produced to cater the needs of different ethnic groups. The number and types of black skin care products has been grown tremendously. Even some existing producers have expanded their business, to provide a wide variety of products to match every skin tone.
How is dark skin different?
Scientifically, everyone's skin is the same. It is made of the same types of cells and the same three layers: epidermis - that is the protective top layer, dermis - the supple middle layer and a deeper layer of subcutaneous fat. All skin types also have the same number of special cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes helps in the formation of a pigment called melanin. Dark skin people have more melanin in their skin compared with people with fair skin.
Advantages of black skin
Dermatologists have categorized skin tones into six different types. At one end of the scale, we have type I as the fairest tone whereas type VI represents the darkest skin type. People with skin care type IV and above, have more melanin in their skin. Darker skin means more melanin and less sun damage compared to fair skin. Dark skin also has another advantage that it less wrinkles, making one look youthful for more years.
Challenges of black skin care
- Acne: Anyone can suffer from acne, but dark skin types are more likely to develop long-lasting skin discoloration
- Ingrown Hairs: African-American's have very curly hair shafts. Most of the times, after shaving, whether its facial hair for men or regular body hair for women, the curls back into the skin, piercing the wall of the hair follicle. This causes, 'razor bumps'
- Skin color variations: The wound healing process in dark skinned individuals is very slow. This further leads to post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation. After a scar heals, the skin may remain dark and could take months or even years for the scar to fade. Most of the times, skin lightening agents are also ineffective
- Vitiligo: Vitiligo is a very common skin care condition, where the pigment cells attach each other and are destroyed. They are replaced by irregular white patches, which is a very unpleasant sight in African-American skin tone. There are various skin care methods for this condition, but none of them have been effective to correct this problem
- Keloids: Keloids is a very common skin care issue, in which when a wound heals, the size of the scar goes beyond the original wound. It is typically found on the neck, earlobes, chest and back. The scars are very painful and ineffective to any surgical or non-surgical treatment
Black skin care products are available in abundance in the market which helps in solving most of the problems faced by dark skin people.
