How to Take Care of Skin During Winter

Winter season causes dry, itchy and cracked skin. As the temperatures falls down along with low humidity the skins starts to loose moisture and becomes dry. Change in temperature and humidity remove important oils and moisture from the skin causing dryness, flakiness and cracking of the skin.

Following are the tips to be taken in winter:

  • Bathing - Never take bath with very hot water .Keep it luke warm so that it does not wash off the oils in the skin. Add oils like almond or sesame bath oils to your water. Alternatively, you can also add milk to your bath water. It re-establishes the oils leaving it soft and supple.

  • Oatmeal baths - , in addition to preventing water loss, also relieve the skin. While taking a shower in winter, exchange moderately hot water with cold water for a few seconds. This gives an internal massaging effect with improved circulation and better hydration of the skin.

  • Cleanse & Exfoliate - Prior to taking your bath, exfoliate your skin with loofah. Keep away from strong base ingredients and anti bacterial products; choose for gentle moisturizing revitalizing products.

  • Make sure that you massage your body with good body oil at least once a week. Olive oils are best recommended for this purpose. You can keep the oil little warm.

  • Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water daily. Keeping your skin well hydrated, will prevent your skin from dryness, rashes and itchiness.

  • Try to avoid alcohol and coffee. Both dehydrate the skin and cause more drying and itching.

  • Consume a balanced diet - which comprises of vegetables, fruits, and fresh fish every day.

  • Moisturize - correctly and your skin will remain soft and supple all through winter. Use moisturizer that has the essential vitamins and hydration properties for your skin. One should apply moisturizer after having a shower or bath. Humid skin traps the water in the upper layers and reduces dryness and itching.

  • Always keep petroleum jelly close at hand. Apply some of it on dry areas to seal the moisture and cure the dry skin. You can massage it on all the dry areas of the body. It is very soothing alternative.

  • If possible, try taking a multi vitamin pill that has high-quality dose of vitamins B, C & E. It will help your skin as well as defend against common cold. Avoid overdose of multivitamin pills for undesirable effects.

  • Use sunscreen in winter - as the way you would use in summer. Perfect sunscreen is one, which is light oil free and has SPF 15.

  • Visiting spas for luxurious and rejuvenating treatments for winter weary skin would be beneficial. Spa and other hydration treatments tremendously hydrate your skin.

  • Use a humidifier inside the house to keep the skin moist.

  • Exercise helps to produce sweat and enhances blood flow to the skin, which improves the skin's hydration.

Do not worry too much about the disaster played on the skin by the changing weather.
