Natural Remedies for Sunburn

Sunburn is caused due to overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiations generally from sun's rays. We all experience the effects of sunburn at some time or other.

If you have spent a maximum time in the sun, then here are natural home remedies to help ease the pain of sunburn and assist in the body's healing process:

  • Aloe Vera : - Aloe Vera is most commonly used to treat sunburn. It provides the soothing relief and may also help in the healing process. Apply to the affected areas as needed. The gel extracted directly from an Aloe Vera plant gives best results. However, if you do not have ready access to one then you may use an 'over the counter' Aloe Vera Cream that contains the gel. For the effective results just be sure that the cream contains a high concentration of Aloe Vera than water or other solutions.
  • Cool Milk Compresses: - The lactic acids and fats in milk are known to have relaxing qualities for sunburned skin. Soak a soft cloth or cotton gauze in cool whole milk (due to the importance of the milk's fat content it is important that whole milk be used in this treatment) and dab carefully onto the burned skin. Do this for around 20 minutes and follow by washing off with cool water.
  • Cool sugarless tea: - The active ingredient called tannin in tea helps to alleviate and relieve some of the discomfort of sunburned skin. Firstly, prepare the tea and after brewing a big pot of tea and allowing it to cool completely dab the affected areas with a soft sponge or washcloth. Alternatively, you could also fill a spray bottle and spray the tea directly on the skin. Kindly do not throw away the used (cool) teabags. These are particularly good for sensitive areas around the eyes - simply place the teabags over your eyes if they feel hot and tired.
  • Water : - The body loses water and essential body salts when exposed to the sun. When your body loses too much fluid dehydration occurs and begins to reabsorb fluid from the blood and other body tissues. To avoid the consequences of dehydration increase your fluid intake to make sure you adequately re-hydrate your body for optimum recovery and health.
  • Lavender oil and yogurt : - Lavender oil and yogurt also help in treating the sunburn. It is simple and easy home remedy for sunburn to ensure your skin health.

The best solution is to avoid sunburn as much as possible especially as it's adverse affects not only include damage to the skin but also increases the risk of skin cancer. Prevention and protection should always be considered as the best treatment for sunburn as it will assist in ensuring your optimum long-term health!

These are home remedy tips to prevent sunburn. It should not replace your regular health care provider. If these home remedies does not prove helpful, then it is suggested to seek appropriate health care assistance.
