Skin Moles
A skin mole is a spot on the skin, which usually is round or oval, either small or large. It may range in color from pink, brown, red, or black. Usually moles are brown in colour due to the melanin pigment. In medical terms, the single skin mole is termed as nevus.
Moles originate from pigmented cells called melanocytes. Almost everyone has moles, at least a couple. Statistically one will find between 10-50 moles on the body. The skin mole can occur on any part. Moles usually develop in childhood or in the teen years of life although some people getting moles during their lifetime and a few people are born with them. Once formed, moles remain for a lifetime and are less pigmented and more raises (more raises?)or fleshy with time. In fair-skinned people, moles occur more commonly on sun-exposed areas of the skin.
Moles vary in size from small dots to more than one inch in diameter. They may be flat or raised, smooth or rough and may have hairs growing on them. Moles may darken when exposed to sunlight, when pregnant or when undergoing certain medical treatments.
Usually, moles are, easily recognized by their typical appearance. They do not itch or hurt and they are not a form of cancer. However, moles sometimes develop into or resemble malignant melanoma, a cancerous growth of melanocytes. Many melanomas begin in moles, so a doctor should remove a mole that looks suspicious. Changes in a mole such as enlargement, darkening, spotty color changes, bleeding, inflammation, broken skin, itching or pain, are warnings of malignant melanoma. People with more than 10 or 20 moles have a somewhat increased risk of melanoma and should be, checked every year by a doctor. If a mole proves to be cancerous, additional surgery may be required to remove the skin surrounding it. However, most of the moles are harmless and do not require removal. Some moles may, also be considered as beauty marks, depending on their appearance and location.
When a mole starts growing, it does not usually go deep at all. It merely spreads along the surface. This is called radical growth phase. Most moles will get to a certain size and stop growing. These are considered benign.
Some moles do start growing downward, which is called as vertical growth. This is not a good sign, and may indicate that the mole is turning cancerous. A doctor should check these moles.
Unless a mole is removed properly, the risk of it becoming cancerous increases enormously. Even if you accidentally knock a mole or otherwise cause it to bruise or bleed, its best to have it checked , both at the time of injury and a few weeks afterwards.
