Skin Fungus

Fungus is a single-celled or multicellular organism. While fungal skin infection is called tinea. Fungus can be true pathogens which causes infection in healthy persons or they can be opportunistic pathogens which cause infections in immunocompromised persons such as cancer patients, transplant recipients, and persons with AIDS.

Some of the fungal infections are contagious, they can spread easily from person to person. A close contact, sharing a comb or hairbrush with someone who has infection can spread the fungus from one person to another. Fungus grows in warm, dark, and humid places. It may grow in public showers, pools, locker rooms, and even the warmth of shoes and socks.

People feels embarrassed when they get affected by fungal infection, but there is no need to get embarrassed because it's easy to treat fungus. Fungus rarely spreads below the skin. Fungus can be found on different parts of the body. Following are some common types of fungal skin infection:

  • Athlete's foot (Tinea Pedis)
It is the most common type of fungal infection, only affects humans and rare in children's. This kind of fungus appears between the toes but can also affect toenails and the bottom or sides of the feet.

Cause: It causes by the direct contact most often through bare feet in bathrooms and health clubs, while leather or plastic footwear that are not open encourages it. Skin becomes white, soft and peels away between the toes. It may infect the sole of the foot resulting in peeling, scaling, itching and sometimes blistering. Either one or both the feets may get infected.

  • Ringworm (Tinea Corporis)
Ringworm is a type of fungal infection which affects hair, skin, or nails. In skin ringworm it begins as a small red area and the size of a pea. It spreads out in the form of circle or ring. It may look like that there are tiny worms under the skin but of course, they are not. Scalp ringworm is found on the head, and body ringworm affects the arms, legs, or chest.

Cause: This contagious form of fungus spreads from person to person. This kind of fungal infection causes due to contact with an infected animal, most often a cat, or from exposure to fungus in the soil. It appears on the skin where the animal has rubbed. This kind of fungus gets removed with the help of appropriate creams.

  • Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris)
It affects on the groin and upper thighs. It appears in both male and female, while it affects men more often than the women. It has an itchy spreading red border.

  • Candida
It is called a yeast infection and most often affects the skin around the nails or the soft, moist areas around body openings. The most common example of candidal infection is diaper rash in babies. Candidal infection appears in older girls and women around the vaginal area.
