Tips to Prevent Sunburn

The overexposure to the sun can damage the skin in various ways. The ultra violet rays from the sun causes dangerous sunburns and can cause skin burns.

Sunburn is a burn on your skin. It is a burn from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The symptoms of the sunburns are minor skin redness and irritation, while in more serious cases it can include blistering, peeling and dehydration.

The damage that occurs beneath the skin because of sunburn is considerably ‘less obvious' at the time of exposure and may in fact take years to produce symptoms visible to the naked eye.

The fact that harm caused to skin cells during sunburn can not only hasten the aging process but also increase the risk of cataracts and skin cancer.

So before you go out into the sun again remember these important tips to protect yourself from overexposure of UV rays and sunburn and its associated risks:

  • Protect yourself from sun. Do not avoid the sun completely as you may develop a vitamin D deficiency. Spend a little time every day in the sun without sunscreen.

  • Wear protective clothing, which includes a long-sleeve shirt and a hat. Use umbrella whenever you are out in sun.

  • Do not forget to use sunscreen on cloudy days .Always keep in mind that the ultra violet rays also exist in cloudy days.

  • Limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Play golf, lay in the sun, swim, etc., in the early morning or late afternoon.

  • Keep in mind that sunlight is greatly reflected from sand, snow, ice, water and concrete, which can intensify your direct sunlight exposure.

  • Apply sunscreen, which contains a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 at least 15 minutes before going out into the sun.

  • Use sunscreen at regular intervals especially if you are perspiring heavily or swimming.

  • Do not lie in the sun purposefully seeking a tan. This will not only damage your skin but will definitely burn you at the beginning of the season. If you want to tan, do it steadily and sensibly, with short exposure and building up over time.

  • Bear in mind that UV overexposure is not restricted to ‘sun exposure'. Sunburn can also occur because of UV exposure from other sources including tanning beds/lamps, welding arcs etc.

  • Put sun block 15 to 30 minutes before going out and re-apply at least every two hours especially if you have been swimming or perspiring.

  • Prevention is a far better treatment than cure. However if you discover any unusual moles or growth on your skin especially if they are irregular in shape, bleed, itch or appear to be changing, then consult your healthcare specialist as soon as possible.

  • When it is concerned to overexposure of UV rays and sunburn that result in skin cancer, then early detection will certainly assist in providing you with treatment that is more effective
